Electro-Harmonix Voice Box Harmony Machine Review – The Wild Child

4.4 out of 5 stars

Electro-Harmonix is a well-known brand of effects pedals. As such, their approach is often times different. Electro-Harmonix Voice Box Harmony Machine is definitely one of their more unusual designs, but also one of the most reliable harmonizer pedals you can get right now. Let's check out this bad boy.

Features

What most people like about Voice Box Harmony Machine right away is its format. Unlike many harmonizer pedals out there, it comes in a chassis that is easy to mount on a pedal board. The only real issue in this regard is the choice of I/O placement. Instead of placing all of the ports on the back panel, they are on the sides. This can create issues if you have pedals close. In terms of features, you are looking at various types of harmonies, 8 to be exact. Electro-Harmonix Voice Box Harmony Machine also features a built in reverb and a vocoder.

Overall, fairly simple. However, it is immediately apparent that Electro-Harmonix went for the core functionality over anything else. Chassis is extremely sturdy, so don't worry about taking this pedal on stage.

Controls

If you have seen one Electro-Harmonix pedal, you have pretty much seen them all. Aside from the graphic design on the top, not a whole lot of stuff changes. We still have the main row of knobs at the very top of the pedal, while the foot switches are at the bottom. In the middle of its interface, you will find LED diodes which indicate the harmony mode you're in. Knobs include Blend, Dry and Harmony knobs for Reverb, Gender Bend, Voice Mix and Preset Select knob.

There is also a mic gain switch for easier pairing with your gear. The bottom two-foot switches allow you to bypass the microphone, as well as choose presets. Electro-Harmonix Voice Box Harmony Machine is very easy to use thanks to everything being labeled so cleanly. It might take you half an hour tops to master the controls and get started.

Performance

Performance wise, we are getting that classic Electro-Harmonix mix of performance and features. In other words, their focus was more on the performance than advanced features. Tracking is borderline perfect and works with just about any instrument you can plug into it. Having a vocoder is not something we see so often these days, but it's a great little effect for sure. What is really amazing is the range of the harmony settings you can work with. Each is tangibly different. The modes vary from very organic sounding ones to fully artificial sounding effects.

Even though it doesn't come with cool LCD displays and similar flashy features, Electro-Harmonix Voice Box Harmony Machine is truly a force to be reckoned with. Better than that, it is just fun to use. Those who own a whole lot of different equipment could really benefit from a unit such as this one.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, Electro-Harmonix has given us a fairly simple, yet straight to the point harmonizer. It's very strong in places that matter, although some would probably write off points for the lack of advanced features. We've found it to be just the right kind of spicy.
