Pedalboards may not be the most glamorous piece of kit a guitarist will ever own, but any gigging player will know how hard life would be without one. So, when we were asked to do a hands-on test of one of the most popular pedalboards on the market, we jumped at the chance. This GhostFire pedalboard from Vangoa promises to strike a good balance between convenience and affordability – let’s see if it delivers…

Body

The first thing we noticed about this pedalboard was the weight – or lack of it. While it measures around 23” x 13”, it is crafted from a sturdy aluminum alloy and can’t be much more than 3lbs in total. It features a rail design, with two internal rails offering space for around 10 standard size pedals, although you could probably fit more on if you tried. The rails and surrounding frame are completely covered in Velcro, so attaching your pedals wherever you like is a cinch, while a small Velcro strip under the board allows you to attach a power supply.

A nifty feature of this board is the two foldable legs at the back of the unit. When pulled out, this tilts the pedalboard downwards, offering you a comfortable positioning when playing, whether standing or sitting. It’s certainly strong and durable – we were able to stand on this board, and it never felt like it would collapse.

Overall, this affordable pedalboard is simple and stylish, with a dark steel paint job and a simple white GhostFire logo on the rear of the board.

Hardware

The GhostFire doesn’t come alone. It arrives in a basic but well-made black Oxford cloth padded carry case, which is lightweight and comfortable to hold with the soft plastic handle. It features no pockets on the outside, but it has an internal zippered pocket for accessories. For this price, we were pleased to see some of these accessories are included – in fact, everything you need to get up and running.

You are given three chunky cables to connect pedal to pedal, as well as a roll of self-adhesive Velcro strips, so you can attach to the pedals of your choice. Throw in a selection of cable ties and adhesive-backed hook-and-loop tabs, and you have a good-value package with great convenience.

Conclusion

There’s no reason to get overly excited about a pedalboard – ultimately, it’s something you need if you play with a lot of pedals, especially if you move them around often. Still, the GhostFire from Vangoa is a very impressive pedalboard for the price. Not only is the board itself lightweight, spacious, and built to last, the group of accessories it comes with ensures you can use it straight from the box. For the relatively low price, it’s a winner – we can see why it’s so highly-rated!
