Ever since 1987, Ibanez introduced a series of guitars was supposed to showcase the cutting edge of their current design. They named the series S, and these guitars have been creating a lot of waves in the industry up to this day. The one we want to show you is the S770PB – a truly impressive six-string that just delivers across the range. It's one of the most attractive and best performing guitars you can get for less than $1000, which comes as no surprise.
S770PB features a body that is similar to most of other Ibanez solutions, but more rounded up in some areas. They've used a combination of mahogany with the addition of an exotic poplar burl top to give the guitar an aesthetic edge. The neck is a three-piece maple design which belongs to their Wizard II lineup. It comes with a nice rosewood fretboard and trademark S series offset inlays. Build quality is impressive, to say the least, and the whole thing feels very solid once you pick it up.
Ibanez is no stranger to tremolo bridges. As a matter of fact, they are one of the brands who uses this design the most. The one you can see on S770PB is a Zero Point System tremolo that was derived from the famous Floyd Rose and Ibanez Edge. You could say it brings the best of both worlds. Tuners are standard, high-quality die-cast set, which rather well at keeping everything in check. You don't have to worry about this guitar dropping out of tune, the hardware is bulletproof.
In terms of electronics, you're looking at a passive setup that includes a set of Ibanez Infinity pickups. You have your Infinity 1, followed by Infinity Single 1 and finally the Infinity 2. All of these are wired to a single volume knob and a single tone knob, as well as the pickup select switch. You're probably wondering why Ibanez didn't go with an active setup, but the truth is that the level of expression these pups bring to the table as too good to ignore.
The tone you get from the S779PB is pure bliss. It contains everything you'd want from a guitar in this price range. We are talking color, definition, clarity and versatility. On top of that, you can hear just about every subtle detail you play on the neck. The performance you get is a bit different from other guitars in this segment, but one that accommodates a vast range of genres and playing styles.
At the end of the day, Ibanez once again proved to the whole world that their S series are nothing to mess around with. S770PB has potential like very few guitars do out there. It's a perfect choice for a working musician as well as studio use. It looks amazing, sounds even better and is priced fairly reasonably. What else could you really ask for?
