Gallien-Krueger MB Fusion Review – The Power Of Tubes

4.9 out of 5 stars

Gallien-Krueger is one of those brands who like to spice things up from time to time. Their MB Fusion bass amp head is a great example of what sort of performance GK can deliver. At the moment, this model is one of the best choices you have in terms of bass amplification. Let's take a closer look and see what exactly MB Fusion has to offer. Chances are it will meet and exceed all of your expectations.

Gallien-Krueger MB Fusion Control

Controls

One of the first signs that will tell you MB Fusion is not your our ordinary amp, is the controls layout. Going left to right, we see a -14dB pad button next to a mute button. Up next are the Gain A and Gain B knobs followed by a contour knob. GK has built in a four-band EQ that includes both hi-mid and low-mid sections. Last but not least, there is a Master A and Master B volume controls. Needless to say, there is more than plenty of tone-shaping potential in this head. No matter what kind of bass you are running, or what kind of music you are playing, GK MB Fusion will get you the performance you need. That much is for certain.

Gallien-Krueger MB Fusion Feature

Features

This head brings some additional surprises once you take a look inside. Gallien-Krueger wanted to give the user a much more natural and organic experience, which is why they've packed three 12AX7 tubes in the preamp section. Combined with the power stage, you are looking at some 500 Watts RMS at 4 ohms while you can get up to 350 Watts RMS at 8 ohms. That is more than enough power for both studio and stage use. The back of the head reveals two speaker outputs as well as a fully integrated effects loop. Best of all, GK's MB Fusion head is only 4 lb in weight, making one of the lightest bass amp heads on the market. That is a lot of juice in a small package.

Performance

In terms of performance, MB Fusion isn't interesting because of its power and output. There's plenty of heads out there which deliver that kind of power. What does make it fairly unique is that all-tube preamp section. When you dial in a tone, you get to enjoy the sound only a set of decent tubes can make. All that plus the generous tone shaping abilities courtesy of a flexible EQ. To say that MB Fusion is a versatile head would be an understatement. If you are looking for something that is compact, light and capable of sounding a larger venue as well as a studio, this is your answer. Gallien-Krueger MB Fusion is by far one of the best bass heads on the market.

Conclusion

While their designs are a bit exotic, Gallien-Krueger's bass amps are definitely at the very edge of modern bass sound. MB Fusion head is not only a powerful beast squeezed into a small box, but its tone is one of the more organic ones you can find at the moment. Because of all that, we can comfortably recommend this amp to bothprofessionals and casual users who appreciate a quality tone.
