The Gibson ES339 is a vastly enhanced version of the ES335, borrowing its outstanding qualities and improving upon its versatility, aimed to fit the modern player’s all-around needs. The Memphis ES339 features the classic “Studio” design style and overflows with state of the art components. When standing on its own, this is a USA made monster of an axe, offering everything you could ask for, if you are on the hunt for a semi-hollow gitbox, that is.
The instrument’s double cutaway body is made of laminated maple wood with a gorgeous gloss nitrocellulose lacquer finish. The Slim Taper profile neck is set-in constructed, made of mahogany on a scale of 24.75”. The rosewood fingerboard is equipped with 22 medium jumbo frets and dot inlays, on a radius of 12”.
The guitar is finished off in typical fashion by its Gibson headstock rigged with six Grover Rotomatic tuning machines. The nickel hardware on the Memphis is a combination of everything that shined in its predecessors, as well as modern innovative qualities. The end result being unmatched tonal precision and quality that justifies its pricing by a large margin. The bridge slot is equipped with a TonePros AVR2 tune-o-matic system and a locking stop bar tailpiece.
The electronics on this masterpiece are internally furnished by its ceramic capacitors, CTS pots and Memphis Tone Circuitry. The pickup combination offers two 56’ classic humbuckers at the neck, shifting through them is enabled by the three-way switch. The control layout features four control knobs; two for each Volume and Tone.
This semi-hollow wonder serves as an exemplary axe due to its remarkable sound. Its low tones are full and smashing while the high gains are sweet and sparkly. The instrument can emulate any style you have in mind, while completely nullifying any feedback even when played at the highest gain levels, thanks to the hum cancellation capabilities of its humbuckers. This will make the axe absolutely shine in your live performances, pair that up with its comfortable construction and you can play it out to your heart’s content.
If we were living in the mythological age, the Gibson ES339 would be on Mount Olympus among the gods. If you are ready to dish out a significant sum on a gitbox of this caliber, be it your first or last or tenth, you can’t go wrong here. It will give you a life-long ride for your money.
