Cheap and elegant, the Jameson Full Size guitar has proved itself as a simple and highly efficient beginner guitar, suitable for players of all ages, including the young ones.
Everything about this instrument is ergonomic and practical – it has its own vibe and sound, and is easy to use. Audio adjustments are limited, but well within the boundaries of acceptable. We took the lad out for a test run, our findings patiently await below.
The guitar comes with a solid body attached to a maple neck and a maple fingerboard with 21 frets and classic black dot markers. Apart from the super cheap price tag, one of the first things we've noticed about this fella is the elegant black finish. Cheap guitars usually don't have classy looks like this, and we have to say we were pleasantly surprised.
But looks aren't our main criteria here, so let's move on! The instrument's neck is a strong piece that's not the slimmest thing in the world, but still works quite alright, even on beginner hands. It's comfortable and easy to use, and the level of fret noise is lower than we thought it would be, so that's quite alright.
Simple, yet effective – a single humbucker pickup, two basic Volume control knobs, and that's it! Some call it limiting, but we believe that for newbies this is a nice combo. All the tonal controls offered to the player are on-point and easy to understand, giving the player the ability to understand the essential adjustments on one hand, and getting the musician to focus on playing rather than tweaking on the other.
When it comes to other notable features, we're looking at a standard fixed bridge, a set of solid die-cast tuners, chrome hardware, a sharp and distinguishable headstock, and no headstock. To sweeten the deal, a guitar cord and a pack of guitar picks have also been included in the price.
First of all, the sound quality of this Jameson guitar is acceptable. When dealing with super cheap guitars like this ($60 from the right retailer!), we don't blindly follow the low price, but insist that certain sonic criteria is satisfied and that the guitar is not unusable.
We are always glad to find a gem that meets our audio demands and this six-string definitely fits the bill. The sound is punchy and packed with warm basses, and the humbucker pickup brings a strong rock vibe to the equation, so bear in mind that this instrument is best fitted for rock, metal, and heavy blues players.
As a standout sonic feature, we'll point out that the level of noise and fuzz is pretty low, and that the overall audio image of this guitar is good enough to drive a beginner player to look for more.
Seeing that this instrument heavily delves into the “under $100” domain, we have to say it packs a heck of a punch for that price. But regardless of the price, it's a decent beginner instrument we can thoroughly recommend to any rock-driven newbie. If that's what you're after, just go for it!
