Joyo effects are starting to climb up the ladder in the affordable category. Their Joyo JF-07 Classic Flanger has proven to be one of the most impressive flangers you can get at the moment, if you are limited by a tight budget. It's arguably among the best value deals available.

Features

For a rather affordable pedal, Joyo JF-07 looks much better than one would expect. We have a wide die cast body with a cool graphic of a Harrier jump jet in the middle of the control panel. For what its worth, the features of JF-07 are about as good as you would expect them to be in this price range. This mainly goes for the surprisingly effective true bypass. What exceeds our expectations is the build quality. Usually when you are dealing with affordable pedals, it becomes apparent that most of them are studio queens at best.

Joyo's JF-07 is actually something that could withstand the wear and tear of proper stage use. This pedal comes with a single input and output, while supplying it with power is done by either a 9V battery or a DC adapter. For the most part, you are looking at a standard package.

Control

Much like the rest of this pedal, the controls are fairly simple, clearly labeled and intuitive for anyone who has used a flanger before. Knobs are sometimes slightly out of alignment, but that isn't too big of an issue. As a matter of fact, we think it gives the pedal a bit of a character. Joyo chose the most logical selection of controls. You have the Regen knob, Delay Time knob, Width and finally Speed knobs.

It takes some time to completely figure out how each of these affects the other, but there is definitely a pattern. When it comes to how precise these knobs are, we have to say that there's some free travel. If you need ultimate precision, this might be an issue. Otherwise, you won't really run into any trouble. Overall, the controls on this pedal are average, and average is pretty good in the budget segment.

Performance

Finally, we have performance. Is there really such a thing as a decent yet cheap flanger out there? The answer is yes. Joyo JF-07 works surprisingly well for what it is. Since the pedal is essentially digital, it is only logical to expect that unnaturally clinical performance from it. However, that is not the case. Saying that it's on par with an analog flanger would be foolish, but JF-07 is much more refined than most guitar players might expect. There is a decent amount of range, and most importantly, almost no noise at all. Whether the foot switch is a true bypass one is up for debate. There are arguments to be made for both the positive and negative answer. In our experience, there's no noticeable coloration of the tone when the pedal is off. JF-07 can even get you a more metallic flanger effect if you adjust it right.

Overall, Joyo JF-07 represents a very effective and consistent solution for anyone who is on a tight budget. The pedal definitely offers more than you would expect for this kind of money, which makes it a great value and almost a bargain. It is proof that cheap isn't always bad.
