Having both a great volume pedal and one of the best wah pedals in your rig certainly gives you a lot of flexibility. But let’s face it – both pedals are typically pretty big and take up a ton of valuable real estate on your pedalboard. The Sonicake VolWah pedal solves that problem nicely, as it integrates both effects into one compact and affordable package. Let’s see what’s on offer…

Sonicake VolWahFeatures

The Sonicake VolWah certainly gives you impressive volume control and wah effects in a package that was designed to save space. Measuring only 5.8” x 2.6” x 2.4”, you could call it pocket-sized, as it takes up less than half of the space of two individual pedals. Both the case and the pedal are constructed from heavy-duty plastic, which keeps the costs lower and helps to reduce weight.

Impressively for the price, this pedal boasts true analog circuitry, while there are two LEDs to indicate whether you are in volume or wah mode. A simple touch, but you’d miss it if it wasn’t there!

The VolWah is powered by a 9V adaptor, which has to be purchased separately. As it does not have the capability to run off batteries, make sure you factor an adaptor into the price or have an existing one at hand.

ControlsSonicake VolWah

Making the VolWah do what it was intended to do really couldn’t be any easier. To change from volume mode to wah mode, you just need to push the pedal all the way forward. This will engage a switch to toggle between the two (it’s the same for switching back). As mentioned, the LEDs are handy in showing you what mode the pedal is in, with green indicating you’re in volume mode, while red shows you’re in wah territory.

Other than that, there isn’t much more to mention. Sonicake keeps it simple, with no other knobs or controls to mess around with. This isn’t the most versatile wah pedal out there, although it works well for its intended use.

Performance

The overall performance of the VolWah is spot-on. The pedal action is nice and smooth, and the analog circuit allows for a very clean and transparent tone with no noticeable noise. You can keep your sound just as you intended it to be!

While it isn’t constructed from metal, the plastic case is durable and built to last. We’d have no concerns with using and abusing it for many gigs to come.

As a volume pedal, the sweep is even and graduated over the entire pedal throw range – just as you would find on higher-end volume pedals on the market – keeping you from having excessive volume jumps at certain levels. The wah function is just as impressive, as it is meant to emulate that classic Cry Baby tone heard from countless guitarists over the years.

Conclusion

The Sonicake VolWah is a nicely-designed pedal solution that gives you two high-quality effects in a road-rugged and compact pedal. The price is also impressive when you consider that you’ll get both a high-quality volume pedal and a great sounding wah for less than what you may pay for just one of those effects on their own. It lacks a bit of versatility but is hard to pass up for guitarists on a budget.
