Stagg LP Electric Ukulele Review – Rockin’ the Uke, Les Paul Style

4.3 out of 5 stars

These days, the best electric ukulele designs have evolved to be a lot more than just your typical uke with a pickup stuck in it. The Stagg Electric LP ukulele is a great example of this, perfectly channeling the vibe of the iconic Les Paul electric guitar in a smaller and more affordable package. Time to take a closer look!

Stagg LP Electric UkuleleBody and Neck

This LP uke features a body made from a solid piece of maple that is shaped in the same design and proportions as a Les Paul, although in a tenor ukulele body with a 14.8” scale length. Coupled with the gloss black finish, it certainly gives off the mojo of the legendary Black Beauty, although an equally cool two-color sunburst finish is also available.

The bolt-on neck is also made from maple, and it is topped with a rosewood fretboard. The single cutaway body shape gives you easy access to all 16 of the frets, and the headstock looks strikingly similar to that of a true Les Paul.

Some electric ukes have actual pickups as part of the design, similar to an electric guitar. The LP uke takes a different route by using an under-saddle piezo design instead. There are no traditional knobs to control it, but there is a bank of three sliders on the active UK-2000 preamp system – two for high and low EQ adjustments, and one for volume control.

Stagg designed this model to be perfect for practicing, as they have included a CD/MP3 player input and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Very useful, as it means no amp is required, even if the jacks’ placement on the back of the body is a little odd.

There is also a standard 1/4” output jack in case you feel like plugging this bad boy into an amp. Wrapping up the package are a set of chrome-plated die-cast tuners, preinstalled chrome strap buttons, and a handy gig bag.

Sound

This uke sounds a bit different from most ‘traditional’ electric ukuleles, as the solid body resonates a little differently to that of a traditional body design. Even so, the flexibility offered by the EQ sliders really helps to tweak things to your liking. Overall, you can dial in a pretty full sound when going through an amp or direct to a PA.

The combination of the maple body and neck with the rosewood fretboard gives great definition on single notes, with chords that don’t sound like mush. The sound coming from the headphone jack isn’t necessarily the greatest, but, considering the price point of this model, it’s more than good enough to practice with.

Conclusion

The Stagg LP electric ukulele really is much more than a novelty-style instrument. It’s truly a smooth-playing uke that gives you some flexibility when dialing in a sound. Practicing with the CD/MP3 input and headphone output is definitely a plus as well, and not matched by many others in this market. Most importantly, with that distinctive Les Paul design, you’ll look pretty cool playing it wherever you are!
