If your kid happens to be a young Stevie Ray Vaughan, and you're on a bit of a budget and would like a smaller six-string for your champion to wield, we have just the thing – the S300 model from Stagg!
Sturdy, strong and blues driven, this small-body Fender Strat copy packs a distinctive roar and high playability. We took it out for a spin and now have a few words to share with you lovely folks. Let's do this!
The guitar packs a 3/4 alder body combined with a bolt-on hard maple neck, along with a standard rosewood fingerboard with 20 frets and a pack of white dot inlays. So right from the get go, we are looking at a classic Fender heavy blues ‘n' roll combo, but more on that in the Sound section!
Focusing on the neck, we are dealing with a strong piece well adapted for a variety of weather conditions, but also a fairly slim piece that's easy to play and jam on. The build quality is solid, the level of fret noise is fairly low, and action and intonation are decent. You might want to take the guitar to a pro to set it up just to reduce noises and buzzing to a minimum, but still – no major remarks here. A great fit for smaller hands!
The guitar is available in three color patterns – classy Neutral Semi-gloss, elegant Black, and party Pink.
As a Fender Strat copy, the axe utilizes a set of three single-coil pickups in the electronic department. To allow you to use those pickups in a variety of ways, the manufacturer included a standard five-way switch for the player to easily access different sonic configurations, going from light and clear to raw and fuzzy. Additionally, the six-string features two Tone knobs for minute audio settings, as well as an obligatory Volume knob for master level control
Other notable features include a tremolo bar, a classic S-style tremolo bridge, a set of six die-cast tuners that do an outstanding job in keeping the guitar in tune, along with chrome hardware, and an elegant pick-guard.
The alder tonewood is what is actually used on classic Fender Stratocaster guitars and heavily associated with some of the company's most iconic models. This alone reels in that iconic vibe with warm and rich basses, strong and prominent middles and still loud and clear highs. Needless to say, you will get the budget version of that iconic sound here, but still a heck of a deal for the listed price.
The sonic attack of the S300 is always gritty and very well suited for blues rock, hard rock and classic rock tunes. So yeah, Mr. Stevie Ray Vaughan vibe once again!
A cool thing about this fella is that the body is actually quite strong, and replacing the stock pickups with a set of classic Fender Tex-Mex pickups or some other stronger type will turn the six-string from a strong newbie to a solid intermediate guitar, which is great.
When all is combined and calculated, we are facing a top bang for the buck! This guitar has all the sonic qualities, sturdy build and ease of play a beginner needs, and the smaller size makes it perfect for kids. If you're looking for a beginner guitar for a kid rocker or blues-wailer, add this one to your list of considerations!
