Vox's AC series are known all over the world as some of the best amps ever made. That pretty much explains why Vox has used that aesthetic design for a good majority of their subsequent models. One of the more interesting amplifiers that belong to this group is their Mini5 BRG 5W unit. This tiny combo brings that very same, familiar design only filled with modern modeling circuitry. Those looking for a decent budget amp in the $200 range will hardly find a better option.
As usual, the controls on Vox Mini5 BRG 5W are located on the top of the unit. However, unlike most other Vox combos, this one features a pretty busy control cluster. It is divided into three sections. First one is your standard input section where you will find a knob that allows you to select one of 11 available amps. You also have a gain knob, a volume knob, and a tone knob. Next is the microphone line-in cluster with trim and send controls. Right up next are your effects with two knobs that are saturated with various modulation and reverb/delay effects. The last section is called rhythm. Unique in nature, the rhythm feature allows you to select rhythm backing tracks with various tempos and genres available.
Modeling amps are expected to be packed to the brim with various cool features. However, Vox Mini5 BRG 5W takes that to a whole new level. No only do you have a decent voicing and effect section, but you also get the rhythm section we have just mentioned. This makes it perfect for home practice. On top of that, this Vox box comes with attenuation, allowing you to drop the output from 5 Watts to 1.5 Watts or 0.1 Watts. The last option works perfectly when you use a battery to power the amp instead of a power adapter. You can expect up to 19 hours of operation on the lowest power setting while keeping the amp at 5 Watts gives you 12 hours on an average battery.
The tone Vox Mini5 BRG 5W is capable of delivering is rather impressive. Vox has modeled in some of their legendary models, including of course the AC30. Small combos such as this one, usually bring into question the amount of volume they are capable of producing. Even at 0.1 Watts, this thing can sound off pretty loudly. Sure, it's not something you would want to use on a stage, but that attenuation allows you to
use it in your home without disturbing anyone. Rhythm and mic line in make this amp a pretty versatile little package.
You can leave it to Vox to surprise us with a rather unusual but ultimately effective setup. Vox Mini5 BRG 5W is by far one of the best models in its price range and one of the most innovative as well. It is perfect for beginners who want to have access to different but quality voices. Speaking of which, the AC30 emulation is so good that even the most conservative Vox fans will like it.
